Real-time against real pilots; this is Star Wars space combat as it was meant to be! Featuring challenging real-time dogfights of 2 to 8 players, STAR WARS X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is one of the most historically significant space combat simulators ever made. So far so X-Wing.X Vs TIE isn't that much enhanced beyond the TIE Fighter Collector's CD. Graphics-wise, it now paints the craft with the true texture-maps from the films, and there's all manner of 65K colour schemes, mip-mapping and light-sourcing. But then TIE Fighter ran on a 486. Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is the third release of the X-Wing computer game series. With its lack of story-driven campaigns, it is not generally viewed as a part of the regular series of X-Wing games, with the successive X-Wing Alliance, instead, considered by fans to be the third installment in a trilogy preceded by X-Wing and TIE Fighter.

Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter is a multi-player 3D space dog-fighter, so unlike it's processors, there isn't a nice story mode to follow. However, it does feature a new game engine with higher resolution graphics. Unfortunately, it didn't take into account later technology, so the resolution is fixed at 640x480. The multiplayer lets you finally figure out which one of your friends is the best fighter pilot in your group, but other than that the game doesn't have much going for it.
The Balance of Power expansion game uses identical music.

Music
The game designers chose CD audio for the game, and the soundtrack is taken directly from the movies. You get to hear the full Star Wars Theme and Imperial March will all the power of a full orchestra backing it up. While the quality is great, the music seems a little stock by this point, and it would have been nice to hear some custom tracks. Also, while the music is perfect for the passive role of movie watcher, it's a little distracting when you're actively flying an X-wing. Also, there are only 7 tracks to work with, and being CD audio, they aren't able to dynamically shift with the mood of the game.
